I just finished watching a story on 60 Minutes about 'Living to 90 and Beyond' that I think you'll enjoy.  It's no secret that our aging population is exploding but did you know that  90+'ers are the fastest growing segment of that population?  The 90+ groundbreaking study evaluated factors that might contribute to living a long life past the age of 90.

Some of these factors included:

Genetics
Physical and Mental Exercise
Diet
Vitamins
Alcohol consumption
Social engagement
Weight

The results of this research study showed physical exercise and alcohol consumption to be strong factors that prolong life.  Vitamin supplementation, however, did not prove to make a difference.  This is no surprise, considering that the vitamin supplements taken by the seniors in this study were not high quality pharmaceutical grade supplements - no wonder they had no impact.

A better testimonial is one from the Landmark Dietary Supplement Study conducted by Dr. Gladys Block et. al at the University of California, Berkley published in the Nutrition Journal in 2007.  This clinical study showed that people who used high quality dietary supplements had markedly better health than both multivitamin users and those who used no supplements.  A summary of this study is shown in the graph.

You can learn more about this study at http://www.landmarkstudy.com

Interestingly enough, moderate alcohol consumption proved to be a positive influence on living a longer life.  For those of you who do not want to drink alcohol on a regular basis, Shaklee has two products that you might want to consider.  They are Vivix and the new MindWorks products which utilize Muscadine and Chardonnay grapes.  These products address brain function and aging well.

Neuroplasticity & The Science Behind MindWorks

I'm back -

Have you been wondering where I have been?  Some of you may remember that I have been busy finishing my Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Wellness with a focus on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) at the University of Minnesota.  This program couldn't be a better fit for me as I have dedicated my life to informing and inspiring people how they can take responsibility for their own health.

One of the topics I have studied and found extremely interesting is neuroplasticity.  What the heck is that you ask?  Neuroplasticity is a term that is used to describe changes in the brain. Throughout our lives our brain and mind are constantly changing.  The brain's neurological pathways have control over all of the body processes.  As we age, however, the brain shrinks and we lose neural connections between the brain cells.  This normal aging process can lead to mental decline.

The good news is that are simple lifestyle interventions that we can take to slow this normal aged-related mental decline.  They are -

1) Eating a healthy diet

2) Exercising our bodies and brains regularly

- and -

3) Supplementing with Shaklee's new MindWorks product.

You can learn more about this new product from MIT trained neuroscientist, Dr. Laurel Fischer, PHD and Dr. Bruce Daggy, PHD by watching The Science Behind MindWorks video below.

A good read to start your new year!

Well, I'm back after finishing another semester of school and getting through the Christmas festivities.  I hope that all of you enjoyed your holiday with family and friends.

While the main focus of Christmas is certainly not about the gifts one receives, I wanted to share with you a gift that my mother gave to everyone in our family.

It's a book called The Traveler's Gift written by Andy Andrews that is an easy read and highlights seven decisions people make that determine their personal success in life.  While my mother has experienced many adversities in life and rarely complains; it is her faith in God, persistence and positive attitude that have helped her to overcome these obstacles.

After having my nose in text books for the past few months, it was refreshing to read a short and encouraging book that is full of reminders of how we can live the best life possible.  I think I will try to read some of Andy Andrews other books before I go back to school in January.  Below are some of my favorite quotes from this book.

“Times of calamity and distress have always been producers of the greatest men. The hardest steel is produced from the hottest fire; the brightest star shreds the darkest night.”

"You must know, that in the game of life, nothing is less important than the score at halftime.  The tragedy of life is not that man loses, but that he almost wins.  As a human, you detour and ease off because you lack understanding.  You quit because you lack faith."

“If I associate with chickens, I will learn to scratch at the ground and squabble over crumbs.  If I associate with eagles, I will learn to soar to great heights.”

“For centuries, dreams have been used to communicate instruction and direction to people of purpose – great men and women.  God used dreams to prepare Joseph for his future as a leader of nations.  He gave battle plans to Gideon in a dream.  Joan of Arc, Jacob, George Washington, Marie Curie, and the apostle Paul were all guided by their dreams.”

One-a-Day, Centrum, GNC, Rite Aid, or Shaklee… is there a difference?

I know you'll want to read the October issue of Making a Difference!. Just look at what you'll find this month:

Are you gambling with your health?
Most people think that there's no difference between One-a-Day, Centrum, GNC, Rite Aid, your supermarket brand, or Shaklee food supplements.

In reality, there's a monumental difference between nutritional products. So... if you care about your health (and your pocketbook), it's time to throw out everything you think you know about vitamin and mineral supplements! It's time to learn the truth!

Read on... there's more...
What's in your supplement?

Co-factors, balance and bioavailability...
When you eat a naturally grown fruit, vegetable, nut or grain, you're getting a complex variety of known and unknown vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and other factors that all work together to build and maintain your health.

Unfortunately, vitamins can be labeled as natural if they contain as little as 10% of the natural form of the vitamin.

Learn all about it here...

Plus... Shaklee ingredient philosophy

As well as..
How changing brands can change your life!
Nearly half of American adults use supplements regularly, generating over $30 billion a year in sales, according to the National Institute of Health (NIH). While you can buy a multivitamin product for mere pennies per day, what does that mean... really mean... for your health?

Then learn what... The most expensive supplement is...

Also featuring…

What do we love? Basic H²!
Most people in Shaklee love all of the Get Clean product line. But the overwhelming favorite is still... Basic H²! Nothing else is quite as versatile, gentle, and yet powerful as this remarkable liquid.

Basic H² is so versatile!  Learn what chores you can tackle with Basic H² in this issue.

GET Healthy and BE Healthy Promotion!

Well I'm back in school and especially enjoy one of my classes called Introduction to Integrative Healing.  Each week we see a variety of short videos that pertain to the current topic being discussed.  This week the topic was about our current US medical system framework.  Boring you might say, but this short video is worth watching.  I am definitely going to encourage my own children to take the 17 minutes out of their day and get inspired by her message.

I continue to be in awe of all the smart people out in the world and this includes Rebecca Onie who is found of the Health Leads program in the above short video.  She believes that in addition to offering health care services that can help patients to GET healthy, we need to offer services to patients so they can BE healthy and not get sick in the first place.  AMEN to that!

Enjoy and have a great day.
