I just finished watching a story on 60 Minutes about 'Living to 90 and Beyond' that I think you'll enjoy. It's no secret that our aging population is exploding but did you know that 90+'ers are the fastest growing segment of that population? The 90+ groundbreaking study evaluated factors that might contribute to living a long life past the age of 90.
Some of these factors included:
Genetics
Physical and Mental Exercise
Diet
Vitamins
Alcohol consumption
Social engagement
Weight
The results of this research study showed physical exercise and alcohol consumption to be strong factors that prolong life. Vitamin supplementation, however, did not prove to make a difference. This is no surprise, considering that the vitamin supplements taken by the seniors in this study were not high quality pharmaceutical grade supplements - no wonder they had no impact.
A better testimonial is one from the Landmark Dietary Supplement Study conducted by Dr. Gladys Block et. al at the University of California, Berkley published in the Nutrition Journal in 2007. This clinical study showed that people who used high quality dietary supplements had markedly better health than both multivitamin users and those who used no supplements. A summary of this study is shown in the graph.

Interestingly enough, moderate alcohol consumption proved to be a positive influence on living a longer life. For those of you who do not want to drink alcohol on a regular basis, Shaklee has two products that you might want to consider. They are Vivix and the new MindWorks products which utilize Muscadine and Chardonnay grapes. These products address brain function and aging well.

Neuroplasticity & The Science Behind MindWorks
I'm back -
Have you been wondering where I have been? Some of you may remember that I have been busy finishing my Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Wellness with a focus on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) at the University of Minnesota. This program couldn't be a better fit for me as I have dedicated my life to informing and inspiring people how they can take responsibility for their own health.
One of the topics I have studied and found extremely interesting is neuroplasticity. What the heck is that you ask? Neuroplasticity is a term that is used to describe changes in the brain. Throughout our lives our brain and mind are constantly changing. The brain's neurological pathways have control over all of the body processes. As we age, however, the brain shrinks and we lose neural connections between the brain cells. This normal aging process can lead to mental decline.
The good news is that are simple lifestyle interventions that we can take to slow this normal aged-related mental decline. They are -
1) Eating a healthy diet
2) Exercising our bodies and brains regularly
- and -
3) Supplementing with Shaklee's new MindWorks product.
You can learn more about this new product from MIT trained neuroscientist, Dr. Laurel Fischer, PHD and Dr. Bruce Daggy, PHD by watching The Science Behind MindWorks video below.
